The first round of the 2012 Stan Trojanowski Northern Junior concluded this afternoon at Ellington Ridge Country Club in Ellington, Connecticut. The golf course yielded only five sub-par rounds all day, as high winds and warm temperatures created quite challenging conditions. Timothy Colanta of Championsgate, Florida leads the Boys Championship after a flawless round of four under par 68, which included four birdies and fourteen pars. Colanta, only a rising sophomore in high school, began his tournament in impressive fashion by carding birdies on his first two holes. He then carded birdies at 10 and 15 to cap off a superb round of 68.

Trailing Colanta by two strokes is Will Essigs of New Canaan, Connecticut, a rising high school senior. Essigs also carded four birdies, but two bogeys leave him two shots off the lead heading into tomorrow’s final round. Rounding out the top five are Brian Carlson, Zach Zaback, and Evan Grenus, who all carded fine rounds of one under par 71 to share third place.Grenus produced the shot of the day when he holed his approach shot into the difficult par 4 18th for a rare eagle. Five players share sixth place at even par, four shots off of the leader Colanta. Among those at even is defending Champion Nick Fairweather of Windham, New Hampshire.

In the Girls Championship, Casey Durant of New Hyde Park, New York, Nicole Scola of Westerly, Rhode Island, and Catherine McEvoy of Riverside, Connecticut all hold a share of the overnight lead after rounds of four over par 76. The final pairing tomorrow proves to be a diverse and exciting threesome, as Scola will be a senior this fall, Durant a junior, and McEvoy will be just a freshman. One shot back of the leaders at five over par sit Julia Ford and Megan Khang, both from Massachusetts, while Liz DiVincentis of Durham, Connecticut is in sixth place alone at six over par.

This year marks the 11th playing of the Stan Trojanowski Northern Junior, an internationally recognized junior championship. The 2012 field is comprised of players from 11 different states, as well as Canada, who have not reached their 19th birthday or entered college. The final round of the 2012 Northern Junior will begin tomorrow morning at 6:45 AM, with the final groups teeing off between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM.
